<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhinmgOsMk1Yy_bf06FPxxhSvChqvWxxoPgE4HonmZ1vuFdk1fd5ICYrUk5204TJVrMzqguon3Gpqf5CafGA0iybdYHGxKc1a85abs-fV32myV-7smNHAqzWfEe8YPxlz397wEJo6p-Ezk/s1600/iphone.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="168" data-original-width="300" height="110" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhinmgOsMk1Yy_bf06FPxxhSvChqvWxxoPgE4HonmZ1vuFdk1fd5ICYrUk5204TJVrMzqguon3Gpqf5CafGA0iybdYHGxKc1a85abs-fV32myV-7smNHAqzWfEe8YPxlz397wEJo6p-Ezk/s200/iphone.jpg" width="200" /></a><span style="text-align: right;">Late September welcomes in not only Fall, but New iPhone Season. However, the prices of the new iPhones gives one pause: $700+ for the iPhone 8 and $1000+ for the iPhoneX. </span></div>
<br />
My first inclination is my iPhone 5S remains perfectly fine for now – what if I just kept it until that's no longer the case? After all, we've had PCs for well over five years before replacing them. Maybe the same could be the case for iPhones?<br />
<br />
However, keeping iPhones for years and years is not feasible. And Apple has a lot to do with this. The main culprits: annual iOS new versions and rapidly advancing technology.<br />
<br />
Like clockwork, Apple releases a new IOS version every year in the Fall. We welcome new features and function that come along with each new version. However, these new features come at a price: each iOS requires more and more hardware and memory to run smoothly. Old phones gradually get slower and slower.<br />
<br />
Each new iPhone release showcases faster chips, more storage and memory. Alas, your phone become slower and slower in relation to the current model. My iPhone 5S, state-of-the art at its 2013 release, now lags behind, only 25% as fast as the current models.<br />
<br />
Typically after five years, <a href="https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201624" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Apple declares your iPhone "obsolete"</a>. It is no longer on the List of Compatible Devices and will not run the new version of iOS. The recently released iOS 11 will not run on iPhone 5, which was released in 2012, five years ago.<br />
<br />
If you want to keep your iPhone longer than five years, it will have to run on a non-supported version of iOS. Is this a big deal?<br />
<br />
One big concern: Apple will not make security updates for older versions of iOS. Knowing your phone is vulnerable to an ongoing open season for hackers is not a pleasant thought.<br />
<br />
The other concern: the apps that are part of your daily life – Facebook, Netflix, messaging, financial apps, etc. – may no longer be available to you. Mainstream apps typically support one prior generation of iOS, i.e. if version 11 is current, they typically require devices that support version 10. The Apple App Store will not allow you to download an older version of the app that your phone may support. There is a <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/263568/how-to-install-older-versions-of-ios-apps-on-an-old-iphone-or-ipad/" target="_blank">clever workaround</a> for this issue, but it won't suffice forever. <br />
<br />
Battery life is another issue. Your Apple Store will tell you the batteries perform optimally up to 300 charge cycles. Very old batteries start to act weird: my son's 3-year-old iPhone 6 – with 600 charges under its belt – was powering down several times a day without warning. New batteries are available ($79 at the Apple Store; they will change it) but is that money better invested in a new phone?<br />
<br />
There is no need to do the annual iPhone upgrade if you lack the resources. But the clock is ticking, and bit-by-bit your belle-of-the-ball phone is evolving into a pumpkin.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvY76VyEXj4v5iGdV5a7n-9FkDJ0WaAI1fOBBNX8v7Ci_WbZkML3CsVZV5eKj0S7jCglt-vC-g76KoYPgak0vFz0EYw8Ve_Vklvwu8ZEu_f_qDJlZuvCHL2y-_OmN2pIe4bg7rlT_RHIU/s1600/siri_cook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvY76VyEXj4v5iGdV5a7n-9FkDJ0WaAI1fOBBNX8v7Ci_WbZkML3CsVZV5eKj0S7jCglt-vC-g76KoYPgak0vFz0EYw8Ve_Vklvwu8ZEu_f_qDJlZuvCHL2y-_OmN2pIe4bg7rlT_RHIU/s200/siri_cook.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
One of the cool features of iOS 8/9 is that if your device is plugged in, you can invoke Siri hands-free by saying "Hey Siri". You can wake up and get the weather without getting out of bed!<br />
<br />
But I felt like an idiot when I tried if for the first time and repeated "Hey Siri's" fell on deaf ears. So much for impressing the wife.<br />
<br />
Duh. The "Hey Siri" feature has to be configured; it's not turned on by default. <br />
<br />
Go into Settings->General->Siri. Then turn on Hey Siri:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyFO2KygoJxfRWYulFpPkmIuL3KlCkjFjHPGGCCsamC1SCmHmyP03rMcg2V5OmRWgVDfrSRRu-zSgsNwY3_zvNLzzHIFCuWrtF8fdYcq5Cw7xnVY4-Bs-aEEb54hnlzAducxL7NZxv4jk/s1600/siri.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyFO2KygoJxfRWYulFpPkmIuL3KlCkjFjHPGGCCsamC1SCmHmyP03rMcg2V5OmRWgVDfrSRRu-zSgsNwY3_zvNLzzHIFCuWrtF8fdYcq5Cw7xnVY4-Bs-aEEb54hnlzAducxL7NZxv4jk/s200/siri.jpg" width="189" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You then go through a few screens so Siri learns your voice and you're good. Yep. Works a little better if you turn it on...</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoSBy56Nkb-YhLBKZBVcRTa4r0GzzIOdmMxIdLDXNmz4OyEvTxdqEMM6756TFVH1gLSW3eVDn7XYIKGmR5h5xXelQ6v55bYSsOhyphenhyphenup8dFJpf9K0MiL-H5fWN0Z4-rtPGoGu1NAlLD5cng/s1600/etekcity_switch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoSBy56Nkb-YhLBKZBVcRTa4r0GzzIOdmMxIdLDXNmz4OyEvTxdqEMM6756TFVH1gLSW3eVDn7XYIKGmR5h5xXelQ6v55bYSsOhyphenhyphenup8dFJpf9K0MiL-H5fWN0Z4-rtPGoGu1NAlLD5cng/s200/etekcity_switch.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: small;">As described in a prior post, my <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2015/11/apple-tv-v4-setup-fails-check-your-hdmi.html">HDMI Switch was incompatible with the new Apple TV 4</a>. I had to directly connect my TV's HDMI cable to Apple TV before everything worked. As a result, if I wanted to switch from Apple TV to playing a Blu-Ray movie, I had to manually swich/replug the cable. Not good!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Why was my HDMI Switcher, which had worked fine with Apple TV 3, a total fail with Apple TV 4? Researching this, I discovered the HDCP specification has evolved, the current version being HDCP 1.4. I suspected Apple TV 4, a brand-new device, might not play nice with devices not HDCP 1.4 compatible.
</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;">
<br />
Using an excellent <a href="http://hdmi-switcher-review.toptenreviews.com/" target="_blank">HDMI Switch comparison</a> I found, I purchased the <a href="https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H9643OW/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">Etekcity 3x1 HDMI Switch</a> from Amazon, one of the few that was specifically noted as supporting HDCP 1.4. <br />
<br />
Crossing my fingers, I set up the new Etekcity switch, turned on Apple TV, and...yes! It worked! I had found a compatible HDMI Switch for the picky Apple TV 4. As before, I could now switch between Apple TV and the Blu-Ray player instantly from across the room -- no more messing with cables!<br />
<br />
Still, I'm upset with Apple. HDMI devices should be downwardly compatible; i.e. they should be smart enough to adjust and communicate with earlier devices. For whatever reason Apple chose not to do this. <br />
<br />
So in addition to paying for a new version of Apple TV, many of us will also have to buy a new HDMI Switch. This adds 15 to 20% more to the cost. Thank you Apple.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span lang=""><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCaalBuYR61PXVl6i-0JUM_SRmQ60WFABc21L7ED0B3JP9wgmcSMGx0QGWV8z1psaodfxw2bK2YjcQrAFQ7iU6pFq4A_buGTnmNYx4fcTACmHRo8-aOgvumZYEJWshNOw3IzorfCaTx4c/s1600/newappletv.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCaalBuYR61PXVl6i-0JUM_SRmQ60WFABc21L7ED0B3JP9wgmcSMGx0QGWV8z1psaodfxw2bK2YjcQrAFQ7iU6pFq4A_buGTnmNYx4fcTACmHRo8-aOgvumZYEJWshNOw3IzorfCaTx4c/s1600/newappletv.jpg" /></a></span></div>
<span lang="">
I was very excited a few days back when my new Apple TV 4 arrived. I've been a big fan of Apple TV and have had the v3 Apple TV for a couple years now. In fact, I've had Apple TV before I even made the move to a widescreen TV -- it <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/12/apple-tv-works-with-older-tvs.html">worked with my old Sony Trinitron TV</a>.<br />
<br />
I wasn't concerned about the setup for the new Apple TV at all -- child's play. Swap out the old Apple TV, plug in the new power cord, plug in the HDMI cable, and...nothing. Literally nothing: a blank screen, and the "no signal" message, the same screen/message I see when I switch from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 and I haven't yet turned on Apple TV or the Blu-Ray (the two share the HDMI 2 port).<br />
<br />
Hmm. Very odd. I tried hitting the Apple TV remote buttons to turn it on (there's no power button on Apple TV itself, but typically pressing the remote button "wakes it up"). I tried the old standby of unplugging/replugging Apple TV. Nothing. <br />
<br />
According to Apple TV4 <a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/2999625/home-players/setting-up-your-new-apple-tv-6-things-to-do-first.html" target="_blank">setup instructions</a> I shouldn't have to do anything. Simply connecting it should bring up the Apple TV setup screen. Alas, a big fail for Apple TV setup. I had depressing thoughts of a visit to the Apple store to remedy this.<br />
<br />
But then I thought of something. I do not have a direct connection between my TV and my Apple TV. Instead, my HDMI signal routes through a small box, an HDMI Switcher. This way the one HDMI port on my Samsung TV can be shared by my Blu-Ray and Apple TV without yanking out cables all the time. <br />
<br />
I connected the TV's HDMI cable directly to the Apple TV's HDMI port, bypassing the HDMI Switcher. Lo and behold -- I got the Apple TV setup screen. My Apple TV works!<br />
<br />
I had found the culprit. My trusty HDMI Switcher, which worked fine with the old Apple TV 3, is incompatible with Apple TV 4. Either the version of HDMI produced by the new Apple TV4, or something in the way it initiates the signal, has changed from v3 and is incompatible with my HDMI Switcher.<br />
<br />
Temporarily I have been cast back in the dark ages of cable yanking to switch from Apple TV to Blu-Ray at home. The search is on for an HDMI Switch that is compatible with Apple TV4. I will post when I find such an animal.(Update: an <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2015/12/a-compatible-hdmi-switch-for-apple-tv-4.html">Apple TV 4 compatible HDMI Switch</a> has been found!).<br />
<br />
The morale of the story: <em>check your HDMI Switch if your new Apple TV 4 setup fails</em>.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 16.86px;">Apple TV has been a great addition to our household: streaming Netflix to our TV wirelessly; streaming content on our Apple iPad or iPhone to the big screen - it's been well worth the $99.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhv4raXrDfs5FVOKKuhDEoj9O7uysbZXbJpp8q5jhFQHUafJen4LqB27O0xQPlf6xZdaekv_QOmC7OhtK_wXHQFXqxIR83ggs5Q5bpInu_KzEWiemMTJMRpmRrZO4ZwYHejBiUpYDoyYM/s1600/appletv3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhv4raXrDfs5FVOKKuhDEoj9O7uysbZXbJpp8q5jhFQHUafJen4LqB27O0xQPlf6xZdaekv_QOmC7OhtK_wXHQFXqxIR83ggs5Q5bpInu_KzEWiemMTJMRpmRrZO4ZwYHejBiUpYDoyYM/s1600/appletv3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">But it's not perfect. As with any computing device,
on occasion it can hang. We'll be starting up a Netflix movie, only to see it
keep loading… loading… loading. Finally an error message. After trying one more
time, and getting the same thing, we know the problem: Apple TV is hung.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10pt;">
<span lang="EN" style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">The problem: how to restart a device that has no keyboard? Apple TV is just a black hockey puck-like
sealed device. Ah, no problem. When in doubt, pull the plug! And sure enough, that works. Replug it after 60 seconds, wait for the Apple
logo for a minute or two, and problem solved.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10pt;">
<span lang="EN" style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">Well yeah, it works, but it's a bit of a pain
reaching into the bowels of the entertainment center, unplugging the Apple TV,
and especially trying to replug the cord without being able to see what you’re
doing (your entertainment center is probably less cluttered). There must be a
better way.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10pt;">
<span lang="EN" style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">So after doing this for almost a year, it turns out there
<i>is </i>an easy way to restart Apple TV – with just the Apple remote. <em>For Gen 3 Apple TV simply</em> <b>hold down Menu and the Down arrow on
the remote for a few seconds to initiate an Apple TV restart</b>. (<em>For Gen 4 Apple TV</em> it is different: <strong>hold down the Menu and Home buttons and release once the white LED starts flashing on/off. </strong>Yes! But, um…how is anyone supposed to figure that
out? C’mon Apple: a tiny little restart
button on the remote – is that too much to ask?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10pt;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">But I guess beggars can't be choosers. You <i>can </i>restart Apple TV from the comfort of your couch just using the
remote: no unplugging required!</span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv30nI2cpTF834p5kSFUs8yNt_j_b0zFdxIjrBxo2walY-KlP6v5l8lqhrSAXN-dY51MW4EE7AjYp49zKIwtVqCmuHlShEnlGwxaMEYv46rd963EZqBjIwdqDz5MczscQit1UD_iM6SYI/s1600/apple+tv+monitor.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv30nI2cpTF834p5kSFUs8yNt_j_b0zFdxIjrBxo2walY-KlP6v5l8lqhrSAXN-dY51MW4EE7AjYp49zKIwtVqCmuHlShEnlGwxaMEYv46rd963EZqBjIwdqDz5MczscQit1UD_iM6SYI/s1600/apple+tv+monitor.png" height="136" width="320" /></a></div>
Apple TV is a great option for high-def video streaming to your TV. We have it and love it. But often forgotten is that Apple TV is a computer in and of itself. <b>What can Apple TV do if you untether it from your TV</b> and get a little creative?<br />
<br />
Apple TV on its own can handle the streaming and wifi connectivity part of the equation. So if you take away the TV, you need display and sound capability, and a way to connect these to your Apple TV device.<br />
<br />
Hmm. Would Apple TV work with only a PC monitor? To test this, I took my Dell monitor, connected it to Apple TV with an HDMI cable. Turned on the Apple TV remote, and big as life the Apple TV start screen showed on the monitor! The remote worked just like with a TV display, I could start up Netflix and stream a movie.<br />
<br />
Now for the sound. If your monitor has built-in speakers, your hdmi cable connection will bring both video and audio and you're set. But my monitor does not have speakers. However, looking at the back of the monitor, it did have a 3.5 audio out port. Took a pair of PC speakers, plugged the green ourput 3.5 male plug into the monitor's audio out port, and tada: sound!<br />
<br />
Here's my working bare-bones Apple TV configuration:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Apple TV</li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-High-Speed-HDMI-Cable-Supports/dp/B003L1ZYYM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1413163238&sr=1-1&keywords=hdmi+cable" target="_blank">HDMI cable</a></li>
<li>PC Monitor</li>
<li>PC speakers (with audio out cable)</li>
</ul>
<br />
What if your monitor does not have an HDMI input? Although I did not test it, using an HDMI-to-VGA cable should do the trick.<br />
<br />
A little trickier is if your monitor doesn't support sound at all, i.e. no audio output. In this case, you have to connect speakers directly to the Apple TV device. Not easy, because Apple TV only supports Digital Audio output. You need:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TH7GSW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">TOSlink Digital Audio Cable</a> connected to Apple TV Digital Audio out port</li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DIRI6I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">Digital Audio to RCA Converter</a> (Digital Audio in; RCA out)</li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AJ692/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">RCA to 3.5 PC Audio cable</a></li>
<li>PC Audio cable connected to PC speakers</li>
</ul>
<br />
I have tested the above sound configuration and it works fine with Apple TV and PC speakers.<br />
<br />
Where might a minimalist Apple TV setup come in handy? It could bring video streaming to rooms in your house where it would normally be impractical. Obviously, you don't want to be carting a 50 inch TV around the house - but moving a 24 inch PC monitor is no big deal. For example you could set up temporary video streaming for party purposes in non-TV rooms or outside. <br />
<br />
Apple Airplay and mirroring works fine with this altered Apple TV setup. By adding an iPad or iPhone you could stream selected photos, videos or apps. Again, great for parties or other temporary setups.<br />
<br />
Old PC that doesn't really handle video streaming? Apple TV and a monitor could be a stopgap alternative. <br />
<br />
Of course, Wifi is needed for all these options.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYHiFglvcuFtTFi57c6X3cnpTa5-4Qb7TfQTh96AMkoRUtHS0Hr_oBsrhkzgl0Nh0tdms11CMJ3VD12ewQylF1RokxVax5BASSmemZ5OCBDf6KB97oIp4JFPJoGIZcVR6eY4JglUCQpYE/s1600/itunes.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYHiFglvcuFtTFi57c6X3cnpTa5-4Qb7TfQTh96AMkoRUtHS0Hr_oBsrhkzgl0Nh0tdms11CMJ3VD12ewQylF1RokxVax5BASSmemZ5OCBDf6KB97oIp4JFPJoGIZcVR6eY4JglUCQpYE/s1600/itunes.png" height="131" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Having recently canceled our Netflix DVD subscription, our family has gone all in on streaming video. Mostly we stream TV shows, which Netflix is ideal for, which we do through Apple TV. But what about new movies? This is where Netflix is somewhat weak, so I figured I could stream rental movies from iTunes through my iPad to the TV big screen. Well...no.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Renting my first iTunes movie, I just could not believe there was no streaming option. Seriously? But sure enough, my only choice was to download the movie to my iPad before being able to view it. Since the HD download ended up taking 2+ hours, there went our Saturday night movie. We were bummed.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well, it's not obvious, but it turns out <b>there is a way to stream iTunes movies</b>. One Apple device will let you do it. But not the iPhone. Nor the iPad. Or the iPod touch. <i>You can stream iTunes movies through Apple TV!</i> Apple TV has only very limited storage - it couldn't hold a downloaded movie - hence the grudgingly-provided streaming option.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I needed to test this streaming option out before getting too excited. Sure enough, going into iTunes through Apple TV and choosing a rental, iTunes will stream the video to your TV. It worked great, streaming was error-free with no hiccups. No more super-long downloads before watching an iTunes movie rental!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Ah, think you're clever, and will start the stream on Apple TV and then switch to another device, say your iPad? Nope they thought of that. The rental is in "Apple TV format" and can only be watched through Apple TV.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Still, beggars can't be choosers. Once you rent the movie, you have 30 days to watch it. This doesn't mean you can watch part of it tonight, and the rest of it anytime before the 30 days are up. No, once you start the movie, you have to finish it in 24 hours. So the 30 days is really only procrastination time prior to starting the movie.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If it's within the 24 hours, technically you can watch the movie as much as you want. If you get to the end, and wanted to re-watch portions of the movie, no problem. Another family member could re-watch the entire movie as long as it was within the 24 hours. And it seemed, once we were bumping up against the 24-hour deadline, if you were in the middle of the movie it wouldn't cut you off. But you might run into trouble if you exited iTunes; I believe we saw a warning message that that was the point of no return: you exit you're done.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">A small loophole, but it's there: you <i>can</i> stream iTunes movies. But only through Apple TV.</span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCRbuBvVxgA6gkTW63EXgt61u_Rj_hKM7l_XJGg3dyE1D3jx_GZt1ZgaGPQAOynfVPb63H4-_-SlljzOxh2ds1klRrWbiJllsfPUkzswaURUAu5kgKi9KX-sgaY2mrcAThHUyje8_SpWo/s1600/lightning_port.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCRbuBvVxgA6gkTW63EXgt61u_Rj_hKM7l_XJGg3dyE1D3jx_GZt1ZgaGPQAOynfVPb63H4-_-SlljzOxh2ds1klRrWbiJllsfPUkzswaURUAu5kgKi9KX-sgaY2mrcAThHUyje8_SpWo/s1600/lightning_port.png" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I recently ran into a serious problem with my iPod touch: it
would not charge. IPhone owners have had similar problems. However, before you
make that trip to the Apple Store, or worse, give up and order a new device,
maybe the simple solution that worked for me will also help you.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I first noticed the problem when I had plugged in my iPod
touch to charge it overnight. In the morning, instead of being all charged up,
it was dead as a door nail. I tried replugging it again, nothing. But when I
plugged it into the USB port of my laptop it charged okay. I thought maybe the
electric socket or the charging plug was bad.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">But next time I had to recharge the problem was still there,
only this time the USB charging option did not work. I tried swapping out the lightning
cable with the one from my iPad, no change: the cable was okay. I tried using
the iPad charging plug, still no charge. Went back to my original cable and
plug, and tried different plugs in the house - finally it was able to charge.</span><br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">But each charge was an adventure. Normally, you'd plug it in
to charge, and there would instantly be a "ding" and a message that
the device was charging. Sometimes, it wouldn't charge at the beginning, but then
charge a little later.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Or, really weird,
it would charge but periodically "ding" on and off throughout the
charging cycle!</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Okay, this problem was not going away, and if I couldn't
solve it, in short order my iPod touch would be a cold brick.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Doing further research, it seemed this was not an uncommon
problem for iPod touch and iPhone users. I tried a few things, but restarting
or resetting my device did not help.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">But here is what did work: I took a wooden toothpick and
gently poked out all lint that had accumulated in the lightning charge port.
Like many guys, I carry my device in my pocket, and over time, the exposed
lightning port slot had accumulated a good amount of lint. I was surprised at
the amount I was able to pull out of that tiny hole.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I then plugged in my lightning cable to begin a charge and
instantly received the "ding" charge acknowledgment. My iPod touch
was back to normal charging!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My very high-tech device was brought down by a very low-tech
problem: lint! The lint was preventing a clean electrical connection: hence the
varied symptoms I saw.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Interestingly, what works so good in the PC world, a compressed
gas duster that blows air, did not do the trick. The lightning port is so
small, and somewhat deep, that the lint gets really pressed down in there - even
with the compressed air the lint remained. Only with the toothpick was I able
to get it lint-free.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Of course, your mileage may vary, but lint removal is an
easy thing to try to fix your iPod touch or iPhone charging problem.</span><br />

My wife and I had what seemed on the surface to be a simple goal: establish a shared, online Family Calendar. My calendar is kept on my Apple devices, either my iPad or iPod touch. My wife, on the other hand, keeps her calendar in Microsoft Outlook (which contains the bulk of family events). My Family Calendar simple request now required bridging the Apple, Microsoft worlds and the mobile, desktop worlds. Could this be done? Ultimately, yes, but not without some bumps in the road.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">iCloud Outlook calendar sharing checked<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
From this point it seemed clear what to do: install iCloud on my wife's laptop, configure it to share her Outlook calendar, and we should be good to go!<br />
<br />
In short order I accomplished both of the above, and for good measure told Outlook to share, turned it on, and...nothing. Nada. Zip. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
She dutifully continued to make Outlook calendar entries, which my Apple devices dutifully ignored. So much for easy cross-platform syncing.<br />
<br />
After additional testing, the problem (surprise, surprise) seemed to lie with Outlook. Even though iCloud was set up for syncing, it seems the native Outlook calendar is not syncable. The solution: ditch the native Outlook calendar and make all calendar entries in the shared (but different) calendar in Outlook.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEccuYsmHCSuLe3zxQLuok2Hcn6JFdkTMMRwxtgpfMfZPND_BiXPYdKeKkGdvrhseqFFGNK7Bo4kX2v6Y9w0vueLUlqmIjMNCZpRmwkGFwgt1SKsTfwb6VqMeXdO0wp1q-hEIt0t54Q88/s640/blogger-image--533919860.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEccuYsmHCSuLe3zxQLuok2Hcn6JFdkTMMRwxtgpfMfZPND_BiXPYdKeKkGdvrhseqFFGNK7Bo4kX2v6Y9w0vueLUlqmIjMNCZpRmwkGFwgt1SKsTfwb6VqMeXdO0wp1q-hEIt0t54Q88/s320/blogger-image--533919860.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Outlook showing only the shared calendars</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This seems to work well. Outlook can be set up to show all calendars, shared and unshared. If you make entries in the shared Outlook calendar, iCloud will pick these up and sync it to your shared Apple devices. When my wife would create/change calendar of events in her Outlook on the shared calendar, these would be synced over to my mobile iPad and iPod touch.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
However, a big problem remained: how to get the several dozen existing events from her native and unshared Outlook calendar over to the shared Outlook calendar. This would seem to be easy: do a Select All/Copy in the original calendar and then a Paste into the shared calendar. Alas, Outlook won't let you do a Select All/Copy from the calendar view. In Outlook 2010 you can change the calendar from a calendar view to a List view and then you can do your Select All/Copy/Paste from one to another.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Outlook 2007 View by Category</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
But my wife still uses Outlook 2007, which doesn't have a calendar list view feature. After a few more deadends, I found the answer: if I switched her native calendar to a "View by Category" view, I could copy all the entries from the native calendar and paste them into the new, shared calendar.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This worked! All her original calendar entries then synced between our two calendars and - finally - we had a Family Calendar shared between Outlook and iOS!<br />
<br />
So, in summary, to sync your Outlook Calendar with your iOS devices:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Share your iOS Calendar</li>
<li>Install iCloud on your PC</li>
<li>In Outlook, copy your native Calendar to an iCloud shared Calendar</li>
<li>Make future changes only to the Outlook shared calendar</li>
</ol>

It's common to shuffle your songs when listening to music on your iPhone or iPad using Apple's Music App. Shuffle all your songs, shuffle for an artist, shuffle a playlist - no problem. So how about shuffle within a genre, say hearing all your Rock songs in random order? Alas, inexplicably, the latest iOS Music App does not provide a genre shuffle!<br />
<br />
Of course, one could use the PC or Mac iTunes and create a Smart Playlist only for that genre and sync it. But that's a hassle, and I really would prefer a mobile device-centric solution.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, there is a workaround - simple, but hardly obvious - use Siri! Give Siri the command to shuffle music by a certain genre, and assuming you can get her to understand you (often a challenge), your music can be genre-shuffled.<br />
<br />
For example, both of these Siri commands shuffle by genre. There are probably numerous other variations possible.<br />
<ul>
<li>"Shuffle music by the rock genre"</li>
<li>"Genre shuffle Jazz"</li>

Since it's possible to have Siri shuffle by genre, that capability obviously exists in the Music app - making it all the more odd that Apple excludes it from the music app's user interface. Hopefully it will be added in the near future.</div>

<div>
I have been on a quest to find the optimal older television iPad streaming solution. In previous posts I reviewed my tests with the <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/09/video-mirroring-on-older-tv.html">Apple VGA Cable</a> and the <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/09/review-apple-composite-av-cable.html">Apple Composite AV Connector</a>. Both solutions work, but each has its own pros and cons, with a significant disadvantage that your iPad has to be cabled to the TV while watching.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Apple TV would have been ideal: wireless video mirroring and streaming. But every review and spec sheet I came across said the same thing: Apple TV requires an HDMI connection. Obviously my old Sony Trinitron with its RCA Composite AV connections did not talk HDMI - it seems I was stuck with my cobbled together solutions.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But recently I stumbled across a comment in one of the Apple forums that changed everything: <i>HDMI to AV converters exist!</i> True, Apple TV outputs HDMI, but if I could turn around and convert that signal back to RCA AV and feed it into my TV, I might be able to get Apple TV to work with my ancient Sony. It was worth a try.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's what I needed:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.apple.com/appletv/" target="_blank">AppleTV</a>: $99</li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00870ZHCQ/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">HDMI cable</a>: $5</li>
<li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0080KN18K/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">HDMI to AV converter</a>: $35+ (note: you will need a converter that matches your TV input types)</li>
</ul>
</div>

I was disappointed in my first tests with Apple TV. Yeah, wireless streaming was cool, but the image was not. The iPad's mirrored image was small on the screen, with black border "pillar boxing" covering a good part of the screen. Frankly, I was ready to return the device. But after more testing, I found relief - the black borders may not be entirely removable, but a simple setting change can minimize the pain.<br />
<br />
Part of the problem comes with different aspect ratios between your iPad and TV. Typically, your iPad will have a 4:3 aspect ratio and your TV will be 16:9. Making sure your iPad or iPhone is in landscape mode when you mirror can help with this issue, but may not totally eliminate it.<br />
<br />
What helped most for me was turning off the Apple TV Overscan setting. Many network signals deliberately "overscan", sending a slightly bigger image than will fit on your TV, ensuring your whole screen is filled, but also perhaps truncating a small portion of the image. To counter this effect, Apple TV does the opposite, shrinking the image to avoid the top or bottom being cut off when you mirror to your TV. The result: a small picture and lots of pillar boxing.<br />
<br />
An Apple TV setting change lets you turn off this Overscan effect, as shown here.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Note the <i>pillar boxing is app dependent</i>. For example, here is the streaming PBS app: a full screen image is displayed. The Netflix app also shows a full screen image.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
In summary, the Apple TV streaming image, when too small for taste, can be made somewhat larger with an adjustment to the AirPlay Overscan setting. As annoying as this smaller image is, it is not across-the-board, but app-dependent. Still, it is something to consider when evaluating Apple TV for your home.</div>

Ironically, one of the most well-designed features of the iPad is one that you can only fully appreciate when you upgrade to a new iPad. Apple's iCloud Restoral process has made moving to a new iPad (or iPhone) easy as pie - as a veteran of numerous Painful PC Upgrades I was truly appreciative of their efforts. Moving to the new iPad Air required nothing more difficult than plugging in my new iPad and typing in a few passwords!<br />
<br />
Of course, you must have an iCloud backup from your prior iPad to be able to do the restore! So the key to a simple set up occurs on the old device, not the new one - see the prior post on backing up to iCloud as you <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/11/selling-gifting-ipad-what-to-do.html">prepare your iPad for a transfer of ownership</a>.<br />
<br />
With a good iCloud backup your apps, data and settings all get restored to your new iPad. Even your wallpaper and the positioning of your icons on your home screens are replicated to your new device!<br />
<br />
The most important part comes right at the beginning after turning on your new iPad. You will see this screen:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ2bSVdCvurx5Ni2xuA_FfG7CLeOA0MzyrQzPnaEhpbFdwahu6IkpTdt7CrmgenCvxZJuX8IZPjU5GGgQxkNNfskxXqnWnt-6vtMmbmK0UJps3mV6MTYypFh-lbeAiAt-DuPGTlEfK7gI/s640/blogger-image--585139489.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ2bSVdCvurx5Ni2xuA_FfG7CLeOA0MzyrQzPnaEhpbFdwahu6IkpTdt7CrmgenCvxZJuX8IZPjU5GGgQxkNNfskxXqnWnt-6vtMmbmK0UJps3mV6MTYypFh-lbeAiAt-DuPGTlEfK7gI/s400/blogger-image--585139489.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
You must <i>select the "Restore from iCloud Backup" option</i>. If you're not alert, it's easy to choose the "Set up As New IPad", which sounds intuitive, but will result in a fresh start and won't restore your apps, data and settings from your old iPad. Just think: "Restore, Restore, Restore" amidst all the excitement of turning on your new device!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRzEcsgNi6xlmbNdJa9hqfI22sn5ilg1qsEC0UY5uW32EY7Ly8W9gdNglJmveu1Q2u1REYVHLqKTHAT3uTATp7uT1sI4Gyk8OtKFvunIg76TGGgbZeN1foZIPjQndGAKuJZhlnWpu6Z_A/s640/blogger-image--1513318898.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="137" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRzEcsgNi6xlmbNdJa9hqfI22sn5ilg1qsEC0UY5uW32EY7Ly8W9gdNglJmveu1Q2u1REYVHLqKTHAT3uTATp7uT1sI4Gyk8OtKFvunIg76TGGgbZeN1foZIPjQndGAKuJZhlnWpu6Z_A/s200/blogger-image--1513318898.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
A quick first part of the restore process restores your settings and icons. Next, you'll be prompted to plug-in your iPad as it moves to the heavy lifting of the restore process: your apps and data. This can take 30 minutes or more so it's a good idea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Bwk5_4YHEIwrzaJwp2GciFrHQNuXFzv0MxddaA_DkDaryFdC2AHOQCB7bCp3JEOEsYwlPbgRH6YHKk1CVz5FoSuhAI2bUOcjDJQUA_Neg-J-NXjWDJuwPV1dh5CX6N9vmN4DcYdHwXQ/s640/blogger-image--1272592819.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Bwk5_4YHEIwrzaJwp2GciFrHQNuXFzv0MxddaA_DkDaryFdC2AHOQCB7bCp3JEOEsYwlPbgRH6YHKk1CVz5FoSuhAI2bUOcjDJQUA_Neg-J-NXjWDJuwPV1dh5CX6N9vmN4DcYdHwXQ/s640/blogger-image--1272592819.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The restore will then commence, and it's fun to watch as it proceeds. Apps/folders that haven't been restored yet will be a darkened color, and will return to their normal bright look once restored. As the restoral is in progress for a given app/folder, you'll see a circle icon and can watch the progress as it proceeds (note the Entertainment and Finance folders in progress on the screenshot).<br />
<br />
You will in some cases be prompted for password, for example when restoring secured iTunes songs. This was the only part of the restoral process that was a bit confusing. At some point I was prompted to put in passwords for my sons' Apple IDs (which I couldn't do since I didn't know the passwords). In these cases I clicked Cancel and the restoral preceded.<br />
<br />
Later however, when I would turn on my iPad, again it would still prompt for these passwords. Going into Settings, my iPad had "not completed" the restoral (in its mind) with this "to do" still open. The problem: the new iPad would not do further iCloud backups until the restoral was "done". So at that point my new iPad was vulnerable if something happened. After I was able to track my sons down and get them to enter their passwords I was good, and backups began to commence as normal.<br />

If you are among the many buying a new iPad these days, you may have plans to sell or gift your current Apple tablet. However, before you do, there are a couple important preparation steps to carry out on your current iPad. This post will cover the step-by-step to prepare your iPad for a transfer of ownership.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
To sell or get your iPad, you need to first:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Backup your current settings and data</li>
<li>Erase your iPad</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>1. Backup your current settings and data </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This is the most critical step, as it would be most unfortunate to perform the next step, erasing your iPad, and losing all your data and settings! Having a current backup will make moving to a new iPad quite easy, as you can restore all of your apps, data and settings onto your new device.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEFTJ58Y1w7LC8VWv34cXzpPSL-CieK4-xB95mB07BBfqXkK_mpoXZQxti1W6hWYNvaglrUUwGVFfP2bQrDY5oKRZJBwUn_BW4ui925FFusLS_gOiA8i8a3Mh507HweWalCXLVhEv5RGg/s640/blogger-image--816635553.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEFTJ58Y1w7LC8VWv34cXzpPSL-CieK4-xB95mB07BBfqXkK_mpoXZQxti1W6hWYNvaglrUUwGVFfP2bQrDY5oKRZJBwUn_BW4ui925FFusLS_gOiA8i8a3Mh507HweWalCXLVhEv5RGg/s640/blogger-image--816635553.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1a. To begin your iPad Backup process, tap on Settings=>iCloud=>Storage & Backup. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUp42mQhuWpMvVqT5kekefs3oRiB6LdcTM_CMmbjj8loz-A-7s-jMmnEjdkIJ9LuR4I-9s7XRgCxdL8POPbiTYOMq3Xi5DQzp6Xlv55dRl_CrgoNxbRNvlas5uENBJCYp3UCCdM9I3Bzo/s640/blogger-image--1488433110.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="90" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUp42mQhuWpMvVqT5kekefs3oRiB6LdcTM_CMmbjj8loz-A-7s-jMmnEjdkIJ9LuR4I-9s7XRgCxdL8POPbiTYOMq3Xi5DQzp6Xlv55dRl_CrgoNxbRNvlas5uENBJCYp3UCCdM9I3Bzo/s400/blogger-image--1488433110.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ensure the iCloud Backup setting is ON (green). This will allow your iPad to be backed up to iCloud.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhecy4vV3ufZMC4lXEgoBnFZTxVa95W4WqQQ_0VR0-qjYz8-S1nNKONxvrGdGY2g1A-Rk8Ykqk2rMf__9LbCdPBKkauRWIZrnSRfcJaWckLHE6j1lhed8gczFN9gchh2Z9KkGIrdVB5nGo/s640/blogger-image--1111234283.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhecy4vV3ufZMC4lXEgoBnFZTxVa95W4WqQQ_0VR0-qjYz8-S1nNKONxvrGdGY2g1A-Rk8Ykqk2rMf__9LbCdPBKkauRWIZrnSRfcJaWckLHE6j1lhed8gczFN9gchh2Z9KkGIrdVB5nGo/s640/blogger-image--1111234283.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1b. Resist the urge to do an immediate backup. Instead, staying in iCloud / Storage & Backup,<i> tap on Manage Storage</i>. Here you'll see each of your IOS devices listed if you have more than one (e.g. an iPhone and an iPad). Select the device you plan to do a backup for, which we will assume is your iPad. You then should see something like the screen above. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
From here you can see when your latest backup was, and the size of the backup. Scroll down to the Backup Options section, and<i> turn to green all apps that you will want to migrate to your new iPad</i>. Setting the app to green will include it in your iCloud backup. Don't stop with this initial screen, also tap Show All Apps, to see and turn on your complete list of apps.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Once you have selected all the apps for your backup, a final check would be to see how big this next backup will be by checking the Backup Size (at the top of the Manage Storage screen). Hopefully it's nicely under the 5 GB maximum iCloud free space. (If not, <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/06/help-icloud-storage-almost-full.html">learn more about reducing your Backup size</a>.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj1nCm9OnF0Rnql3w4XlmNx2fSweOM7sETp3TG2L69lk6xOIaEuGQC166M0m3SnI8auz4PfWOt0ehVXPR243coguX1LLNT5rADnMyQzEMf-urTYKaPhfIsMWr6Bzs_dWPXS02a01GT4LA/s640/blogger-image--697137202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj1nCm9OnF0Rnql3w4XlmNx2fSweOM7sETp3TG2L69lk6xOIaEuGQC166M0m3SnI8auz4PfWOt0ehVXPR243coguX1LLNT5rADnMyQzEMf-urTYKaPhfIsMWr6Bzs_dWPXS02a01GT4LA/s640/blogger-image--697137202.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1c. You should now be ready for your iPad Backup. <i>To do your Backup, go to Settings=>iCloud=> Storage & Backup. At the bottom you'll see the Back Up Now option</i>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC3J8MPB4VI2EA2A-tnAECOQ0nD0VgKKzTw6lnKSMEW9TUkPPHLN8YJM5NeHNhiwswHZvbgl1cYQdfatQrvZXSbrXUxsl3TmHrPABvw_nnD4wT8W_hpL8CgRIBh8n3llxqJfjM6HSKZO8/s640/blogger-image-1571173075.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC3J8MPB4VI2EA2A-tnAECOQ0nD0VgKKzTw6lnKSMEW9TUkPPHLN8YJM5NeHNhiwswHZvbgl1cYQdfatQrvZXSbrXUxsl3TmHrPABvw_nnD4wT8W_hpL8CgRIBh8n3llxqJfjM6HSKZO8/s1600/blogger-image-1571173075.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Tap Back Up Now and your backup will start. You may be prompted to first plug in your iPad while the Backup commences, as it may take a little while.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b>2. Erase your iPad</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Once your iPad's data, apps and settings have been safely backed up (and ideally restored and working on your new iPad) it's time to wipe this iPad clean and prepare it for its new owner. The only reason not to do this is if you are giving the iPad to someone in your family that will have permission to use your same Apple account (e.g. your spouse). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh608RzLAUBuUyA0EQdLVTaegMsh44dttsJbJEtEMGnaL4CVzx6Gh_WJrWlYnTfo0UH9hKe4Ux9EAqEc2KXsxCPhzVAUPcUYvTQetROFhC14yyKJIEXGtC_qvjl8WJTwEPH5XFuYhmADhk/s640/blogger-image-1034669732.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh608RzLAUBuUyA0EQdLVTaegMsh44dttsJbJEtEMGnaL4CVzx6Gh_WJrWlYnTfo0UH9hKe4Ux9EAqEc2KXsxCPhzVAUPcUYvTQetROFhC14yyKJIEXGtC_qvjl8WJTwEPH5XFuYhmADhk/s640/blogger-image-1034669732.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
2a.<i> Go to Settings=>General</i>. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and <i>find the Reset option.</i> Tap Reset to begin the erase process. (Note: for iOS 7 or later you will have to turn off Find My iPad/iPhone.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
2b. Here is the Reset screen. A number of options are here. <i>Choose the Erase All Content and Settings option if you are selling or giving away your iPad</i>. (More information on <a href="http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-reset-ipad-settings.html" target="_blank">Reset screen options</a>.)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>

Walt Mossberg, the Technology Columnist of the Wall Street Journal, has high praise for the new iPad Air in his recent review. The improvements are significant, and make a fine product even better in his opinion.<br />
<br />
He cites these upgrades to the iPad:<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Thinner</b>: Apple has reduced the thickness of the iPad by 20%</li>
<li><b>Smaller</b>: the new iPad is 9% narrower, while maintaining the 9.7" screen size</li>
<li><b>Lighter</b>: now weighing 1 lb., 28% lighter</li>
<li><b>Faster</b>: a new 64 bit A7 Chip, up to 100% faster than some earlier models</li>
<li><b>Battery</b>: all while maintaining the 10 hour battery life</li>
</ul>
<div>
In his words: "the battery performance of the iPad Air simply blew me away...clocking a battery life of 12 hours and 13 minutes, which exceeded Apple's claims by more than 20%."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He concludes: "If you can afford it, the new iPad Air is the tablet I recommend, hands down."</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisZ-jUYuzn1Nu9h90sNVUSOzOn_SxK3v-p_2tFiO_sT9BI9o482qXjycMSsxBdc1RtmWI8n8jLISM9ZTf_RkMuLmhaSNLhIHQAAXNnqBUcVAakFXDMKF18RXHEWBAPy2kgOz4l4_BAnKs/s640/blogger-image-1940666862.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisZ-jUYuzn1Nu9h90sNVUSOzOn_SxK3v-p_2tFiO_sT9BI9o482qXjycMSsxBdc1RtmWI8n8jLISM9ZTf_RkMuLmhaSNLhIHQAAXNnqBUcVAakFXDMKF18RXHEWBAPy2kgOz4l4_BAnKs/s200/blogger-image-1940666862.jpg" width="187" /></a></div>
<div>
<div>
Auto update for apps was an iOS 7 feature I was much anticipating. The novelty of seeing those numbers in red circles above the App Store icon wore off really fast. Diligence in running updates hardly mattered, as the updates came so frequently that the dreaded red numbers were quickly back. It became like painting the Golden Gate Bridge - the job was never done.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Imagine my disappointment then when, the day after installing iOS 7, I was greeted with the familiar Red Circle Number above the App Store! Sure enough, updates were waiting to be installed. How could this be?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Turns out there is a simple explanation. The App Store auto update feature is definitely part of iOS7, as advertised. What isn't advertised is,<i> by default, auto-updating is turned <b>OFF</b>. Until you turn it on, you remain in manual update mode.</i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once you know this turning on app auto updates is easy.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVTZQ3M8WiasdhdO6kCQRNRJinr21ub-a40-yV7t4KPKhCAznfYq0o_Y5aVfL31ukOIydhaEFGIqvAmKNhI1lkZtrTNfoSq43SRnSwrgGvz2DjTJMFoRjysI-F5vj9fIajAg9QsyAZO2Y/s640/blogger-image-1151788547.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVTZQ3M8WiasdhdO6kCQRNRJinr21ub-a40-yV7t4KPKhCAznfYq0o_Y5aVfL31ukOIydhaEFGIqvAmKNhI1lkZtrTNfoSq43SRnSwrgGvz2DjTJMFoRjysI-F5vj9fIajAg9QsyAZO2Y/s400/blogger-image-1151788547.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
</div>
<div>
1. Go into the Settings app. Tap on iTunes & App Store. Look for the Automatic Downloads section, where you can find the Updates setting. As in the screen shot, note it is set to OFF (white).</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwxgJU_8RP8uDEPz9ec4-40cloG0xiFXOts1qfhZ_ZD3qAcl5fbHLU63DCSDZXizzUgD_M693Md7x-uYFs-AiB0FgWyAsWSU_5rFepmXzE7fy8_8xQ9UZTy0-uiXwYErvVnzyk9A_B9mU/s640/blogger-image-1128301429.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwxgJU_8RP8uDEPz9ec4-40cloG0xiFXOts1qfhZ_ZD3qAcl5fbHLU63DCSDZXizzUgD_M693Md7x-uYFs-AiB0FgWyAsWSU_5rFepmXzE7fy8_8xQ9UZTy0-uiXwYErvVnzyk9A_B9mU/s400/blogger-image-1128301429.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
</div>
<div>
2. <i>Tap the Update setting so it goes to ON (green)</i>. Auto-updating is now on and begins immediately.</div>
<div>
When I exited Settings and looked again at the App Store icon the dreaded Red Numbers were no more - yay!<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioMu_rqmZmn4DPVkL5VLhHI1JBFR9pvzHZ97T6ZIybjzzci9BUpBPwtfBco64btuzfSugXu2iXclNY2ptjLhMIVeE46Z3pTjcR8svjtUIdRqkIwDEW64sUXpDsldTgts5J-HpgT5WeDsc/s640/blogger-image--1978275584.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioMu_rqmZmn4DPVkL5VLhHI1JBFR9pvzHZ97T6ZIybjzzci9BUpBPwtfBco64btuzfSugXu2iXclNY2ptjLhMIVeE46Z3pTjcR8svjtUIdRqkIwDEW64sUXpDsldTgts5J-HpgT5WeDsc/s200/blogger-image--1978275584.jpg" width="172" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Although my iPad was good for auto-updating now, I question Apple's decision on this one. How many thousands of users will remain in manual update mode by default?<br />
<br />
I like the idea of choice, letting you turn off auto updates if desired, but auto updates should be turned on by default as the setting that would best serve the vast majority of users.</div>
</div>

If you have an older, legacy television, can you still stream your iPad or iPhone to your TV, watching movies on a larger screen? An earlier post showed <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/09/review-apple-composite-av-cable.html">streaming is possible using the Apple Composite AV Cable</a>; however, my testing also showed this experience was a far cry from video mirroring (where your TV display mirrors what's on your iPad).<br />
<br />
So is iOS video mirroring on your old TV doable at all?<br />
<br />
I'm pleased to say <i>video mirroring is possible on that old TV</i> in many cases. Using a different combination of cables you can mirror your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch on your legacy TV, as this post will show.<br />
<br />
What will video mirroring buy you? After all, the Composite AV Cable solution is simpler, requiring only one cable. However, the streaming only displays on your TV if it is supported by the video app you are using, and support is sporadic. And anything that is not "streamed" definitely cannot show on the TV using the Composite Cable: games, the Internet, regular apps, etc. Video mirroring should allow everything to display on the TV, just as you see it on your iPad or iPhone.<br />
<br />
However, this video mirroring solution requires a combination of cables, and so may test the patience of some. It's not difficult, but it's also not an easy, simple solution.<br />
<br />
<b>Older TV Video Mirroring - What You Need</b><br />

Here's the environment I tested with: I have an iPad 3 with a 30-pin connector. My television is a Sony Trinitron with RCA composite connections. <i>The two most important variables here are your iOS connection (30- pin or Lightning) and your video-in TV connection</i>, which can vary the cables you need.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">RCA audio cable</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
3. <b>Audio cable</b><br />
#2 above handles video; you also need to account for your sound. A simple choice is to listen from your iPad. But a better option is to use a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Audio-Cable-Splitter-1-Mini/dp/B00004Z5CP/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_y" target="_blank">RCA audio cable</a> (red/white cables) that connects to your iOS device. You'll want a Stereo 3.5mm to stereo RCA Y cable connector cable. If you connect this cable from your iPad to your TV audio-in this will play your sound through the TV speakers. If you have a receiver, connect the cable to the audio-in of your receiver and your iPad's audio will sound great through your big speakers!<br />
<br />
<b>Testing Results</b><br />
All in all, video mirroring worked quite well! I connected everything, powered on my iPad, and my start screen displayed immediately on the TV. The Internet with Safari, Games, and virtually all apps, including those streaming apps that did not work with the Composite AV Cable, display on the legacy TV. From this standpoint, it's a very satisfying solution.<br />
<br />
<b>Limitations</b><br />
What doesn't work? Amazon Instant Video, just as it does with the Component AV cable, does not display on the TV - the Amazon app blocks the signal. Also (and ironically), movies purchased through iTunes will not display on your TV either; the Apple app apparently does this to prevent piracy. iTunes movies are the one item that works okay using the Composite AV Cable, but not with the video mirroring setup. Finally, the Netflix app streams fine to the TV, but doesn't video mirror on your iOS device.<br />
<br />
It's important to note that video output through an RCA connection is limited to 800x600 resolution. I have watched hours and hours of video streaming in this manner, and for most uses this resolution is acceptable; still,you may be dissatisfied with the video quality. Certainly it's no match for the iPad's retina display.<br />
<br />
<b>Summary</b><br />
I find the trade-off of a larger screen, big speaker sound, and an environment where the whole family can easily watch a video worth the sacrifice of the reduced resolution. Of course, a new HDTV would nicely solve the resolution problem! But if you have an older TV for now, this solution will let you video mirror with your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. <br />
<br />
Finally, for those willing to invest a little more, it is possible to use <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/12/apple-tv-works-with-older-tvs.html">Apple TV with older, non-HDMI TVs</a>.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am on a mission to find the best way to stream iPad content to my old TV. The "old" part is the challenge: I currently own a 27" Sony Trinitron. There are a lot of sexy new ways, such as <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/12/apple-tv-works-with-older-tvs.html">Apple TV</a>, to display content on new HD TVs. <i>But how to display iPad and other iOS content on an older TV</i>, not blessed with HDMI connections?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here I'll review <a href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC748ZM/A/apple-composite-av-cable?fnode=3a" target="_blank">Apple's Composite AV Cable</a>, which seemed feasible, as I have the iPad 3 with the 30-pin connector, the connector used by the Composite AV Cable, and AV connections are fine for most old TVs. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The type of connector used by your iOS device is in fact critical. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">If you have a newer iOS device with the Lightning Connector (e.g. iPhone 5, iPad 4, iPod touch 5th-generation) you cannot use the Composite AV Cable. You might think you could get the lightning-to-30-pin cable and connect that to the Composite AV Cable. But no. <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/08/iphone-ipad-screen-on-desktop-monitor.html">My testing has shown the lightning-to-30-pin cable does not support video</a>, as Apple also states on its site. (Later I'll discuss a possible option for newer iOS lightning devices.)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Composite AV Cable has the standard set of three AV /RCA cables, colored yellow, red and white. For older TVs, this is often your only option for video and audio in (yellow = video; red/white = stereo audio). The cable is conveniently long, about 6 feet, and in addition to the three AV cables includes a fourth USB cable, which can be used to power your iPad during use.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">From prior experience connecting a laptop PC to my television with an RCA composite cable, I expected to plug the cables into the television, plug the 30 pin connector to my iPad, turn both on and have my iPad screen display on the TV. This is known as "video mirroring". This is not, repeat <i>not</i>, what you get with the Composite AV Cable.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Instead, I plugged everything in, turned on the iPad 3 and the TV, and got...nothing. All I saw was a blank, grey screen, and I tried this on two TVs just to make sure. I was getting audio, but nothing else. I tried running some apps, Safari, etc. - nothing. It looked like I had a defective video cable.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Luckily, before returning the cable, I decided to try the Netflix app. Lo and behold, up came the familiar red Netflix starting screen, both on my iPad and on the TV! At least at that point I knew the video cable wasn't defective. However, confusingly, on my iPad the red start screen disappeared and went into the normal list of available shows on the app, but this isn't what was on the TV screen. The TV screen continued to only show the red Netflix start screen! What was going on here?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So I selected a Netflix show in the app and started to play it. Immediately, the iPad screen reverted to the Netflix logo. However, simultaneously, the video streaming began displaying on the TV, and only on the TV. Not exactly what I was expecting, but hey, streaming was "working".</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well, not optimal, but at least I knew the score. All I needed to do would be to round up all the various streaming possibilities, Safari or in-app, and I should be good!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Ah, if only it was that easy. It seems whether an app or a website can stream to the TV (at least through the Composite AV Cable) is up to the whim of the developer. Some stream fine, some don't stream at all, and some stream in Safari but not in the app (or vice versa). The variability and unpredictability is frustrating - it's all so Android-like.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">As promised, here is a possible </span><i style="font-family: inherit;">solution for connecting the new iOS lightning connector devices to old TVs.</i><span style="font-family: inherit;"> It's ugly (and expensive), but Apple forum user PatrickGaerlan suggests a possible solution for newer iOS Lightning devices: </span><a href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD826ZM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter?fnode=3a" style="font-family: inherit;" target="_blank">Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter</a><span style="font-family: inherit;"> + HDMI Cable +</span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Universal-Composite-Converter-Standard/dp/B0080KN18K/ref=reg_hu-rd_add_1_dp" style="font-family: inherit;" target="_blank"> Mini HDMI2AV Converter</a><span style="font-family: inherit;"> + AV composite cables (any).</span><br />
<br />
Also, I have discovered <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/12/apple-tv-works-with-older-tvs.html">how to get Apple TV to work on older TVs without an HDMI connection</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZQtiblNu1sh6gSGyUq-189aq7Zai5lH8lZnP6oUAqJKc3ZOsoA7KPSFt9VvaFdvvOyjyjhueyVFlrr0gZ7EhEhxN6miTs4Dzh8QtfGE3xmczaHu18fgoOi5MW06Y5XyfaIu8C-and-eU/s1600/desktop_monitor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZQtiblNu1sh6gSGyUq-189aq7Zai5lH8lZnP6oUAqJKc3ZOsoA7KPSFt9VvaFdvvOyjyjhueyVFlrr0gZ7EhEhxN6miTs4Dzh8QtfGE3xmczaHu18fgoOi5MW06Y5XyfaIu8C-and-eU/s200/desktop_monitor.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
Your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is great for on-the-go computing, and the screen size is fine for your needs. But be honest - aren't there times when you gaze longingly at your giant desktop monitor, and think "what if"? <i>Wouldn't it be great to take your tiny iPhone display and put it up on the big screen?</i></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is not a wild and crazy idea.<b> It is doable - with a simple accessory for your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch iOS device</b>. I am creating this post now using the Notes App displayed on my Dell 24" monitor, and I am loving it more by the minute!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Why an external display?</b></div>
<div>
Here are a few reasons people might want to display their iOS device on a PC or Mac Monitor:</div>
<div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Business presentations</li>
<li>Party sharing - sharing iPhone videos, apps, games to a number of friends</li>
<li>Teacher presentations using a VGA projector</li>
<li>Long term "real work" - better ergonomics for students, writers and others that have traded in their laptop for an iPad</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<b><br /></b>
<b>How to show your iOS display on your large monitor</b></div>
<div>
All you need is a compatible <i>VGA adaptor for your iPad or iOS device</i> to make this work. No special software, apps, etc. Brilliant! With the adaptor, here's how it works:<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR1tneZj721p2r1DUwJFAIgUT-SDK6Ij5wQL5UgSeJ6aOW5mIa7fO9T2_XxGDJzb8VVYrkTvUKynrz4FpTFlCni2sznVlxRfQT1ogcJjcZQQSWTR4I0yseyD2EMA2wFjsTbXc9-85DKAs/s1600/30_VGA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR1tneZj721p2r1DUwJFAIgUT-SDK6Ij5wQL5UgSeJ6aOW5mIa7fO9T2_XxGDJzb8VVYrkTvUKynrz4FpTFlCni2sznVlxRfQT1ogcJjcZQQSWTR4I0yseyD2EMA2wFjsTbXc9-85DKAs/s200/30_VGA.jpg" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Apple 30-pin to VGA Adapter</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<ol>
<li>The adapter plugs into your iPad / iPhone charging slot. On the other end is a (female) VGA connector.</li>
<li>Plug your monitor's (male) VGA cable into the (female) iPad VGA adapter connector. (Just like you would connect the monitor to a laptop).</li>
<li>Turn on your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch. The phone/tablet screen will also show on your large-screen desktop monitor! </li>
</ol>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b>iOS / VGA Adapter - which one should I get?</b></div>
<div>
I have an iPad 3, with the 30-pin connector. For 30-pin connector iOS devices you need the <a href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC552ZM/B/apple-vga-adapter" target="_blank">Apple 30-pin VGA Adapter</a>. I found a similar <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006HGGP7I/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">30-pin VGA Adapter on Amazon</a> for less (make sure you check out reviews on non-Apple accessories to make sure you don't get a lemon).</div>
<div>
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ESv2wEeLPiU9HkDz_CHZijavIMm5ty0xc2wxXDABD73TQ0ZbyA91W1XfKCj4MrCeFophthvBUh-q5ffIL1y-FHqPNBZTuKD0CVlUijsVuClKGfEhr2u9aAoCD2oS_eHzrLzbsfIYJdo/s1600/lightning_VGA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ESv2wEeLPiU9HkDz_CHZijavIMm5ty0xc2wxXDABD73TQ0ZbyA91W1XfKCj4MrCeFophthvBUh-q5ffIL1y-FHqPNBZTuKD0CVlUijsVuClKGfEhr2u9aAoCD2oS_eHzrLzbsfIYJdo/s200/lightning_VGA.jpg" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Apple Lightning to VGA Adapter</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
If you have an iOS device with the new Lightning connector (like the iPhone 5) you need a different adapter, the <a href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD825ZM/A/lightning-to-vga-adapter" target="_blank">Apple Lightning VGA Adapter</a>.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are unsure which adapter your iOS device needs, use this Apple summary of the <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4108" target="_blank">correct VGA adapter for various iOS devices</a>.<br />
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b>Testing - some limitations</b><br />
The iPad 3 works great with the 30-pin VGA Adapter. However, if you have lightning connector devices, and want to use the lightning to 30-pin Apple converter, my testing shows this combination does not work for monitor displays. <br />
<br />
I tested the following:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>iPad Mini => Lightning to 30-pin Apple converter=>30-pin VGA Adapter=>VGA Display</li>
<li>iPod Touch 5th Generation => Lightning to 30-pin Apple converter=>30-pin VGA Adapter=>VGA Display</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
Both of the above combinations do not work. No video output occurs on the VGA Display. You need a direct connection with the <a href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD825ZM/A/lightning-to-vga-adapter" target="_blank">Apple Lightning VGA Adapter</a> for video output. (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Lightning-to-VGA-Adapter/product-reviews/B009WQOS1U/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1" target="_blank">Amazon reviews</a> confirm lightning pin iOS devices (e.g. iPhone 5) <i>do display </i>on VGA displays using the Lightning VGA Adapter cable.)<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihGE4586p3savH8291-Zg9ve8Jzo-h5VVqNumZyAtHccwNJuzlKkBNFFukapNiVHIuurJeXH6n6X2RnndJIRVY_oBokbDUtzwuKCN5evz4NnJW5wsgR2yPUObIn_5cBridW_A3JCmRGp0/s1600/lightning_30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihGE4586p3savH8291-Zg9ve8Jzo-h5VVqNumZyAtHccwNJuzlKkBNFFukapNiVHIuurJeXH6n6X2RnndJIRVY_oBokbDUtzwuKCN5evz4NnJW5wsgR2yPUObIn_5cBridW_A3JCmRGp0/s200/lightning_30.jpg" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lightning to 30-pin Adapter does not work for VGA display</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is disappointing. <i> If you have legacy 30-pin Apple devices and some new lightning connector Apple devices, you need to buy two expensive VGA adapter cables </i>if you want each respectively to use a VGA monitor<i>.</i> The 30-pin Apple converter by itself won't let a lightning device piggyback off the 30-pin VGA adapter.<br />
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<b>Also tested</b> was the iPod Touch 4th Generation=>>30-pin VGA Adapter=>VGA Display combination. Apple's documentation says this works for "video out" but not "video mirroring". My testing shows this to work, albeit with the stated limitation. Unlike my iPad 3, plugging in the fourth generation iPod Touch, you will not see on the monitor what you see on the iPod. The home screen, apps, Internet will not be "mirrored" on your desktop display. However, <i>"video out", i.e. streaming video, will show on the display</i>. For example, YouTube videos from your fourth generation iPod touch will display on a large monitor.</div>

Lessons from sharing the wireless, bluetooth Apple Keyboard amongst a family's mobile Apple devices.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On a family vacation recently, the wireless Apple Keyboard proved a popular accessory to have handy. Blogging, long emails and creative writing were way easier with the bluetooth keyboard!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Of course to facilitate keyboard sharing, one needs to know how to share the Apple Keyboard with different devices. Bluetooth is a slick technology, but it also has made device sharing more complicated than simply passing the keyboard to the next person. The bluetooth Apple Keyboard is a true believer of Serial Monogamy - once "paired" with a device, it will not connect with any other device until "unpaired" with the original.<br />
<br />
<i>The key to sharing the keyboard is knowing how to pair and unpair it easily</i>. Fortunately for Keyboard Sharers, this bluetooth keyboard does not dwell on the past, and will freely "move on" to its latest device!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>How to Pair / Unpair the Bluetooth Apple Keyboard</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a simple example, sharing a bluetooth Apple Keyboard with iPad A (a regular iPad) and iPad B (a mini iPad). The same sharing steps would apply to other iOS devices - the iPhone and iPod Touch.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. The Apple Keyboard is being used by iPad A. iPad B may also be on and in the vicinity, but no matter, iPad A is bluetooth-paired with the wireless keyboard and will have nothing to do with iPad B. But what if we want to switch so iPad B can use the keyboard?</div>
<div>
2. Unpair the Bluetooth Apple Keyboard from the first iPad. Remember, the current relationship has to end before a new one can commence! The easiest way to "unpair" the bluetooth keyboard is to<i> turn off Bluetooth on the iPad it is currently "paired" with</i>, i.e. iPad A. Do this: <b>Settings App > Bluetooth >OFF</b>.</div>
<div>
3. It may also help to power off the Apple Keyboard to complete the unpairing.</div>
<div>
4. While Bluetooth remains OFF on iPad A, turn on iPad B and make sure Bluetooth is ON for that device (<b>Settings App > Bluetooth > ON</b>).</div>
<div>
5. <i>Turn on the Bluetooth Apple Keyboard</i>. With iPad B Bluetooth on, and iPad A Bluetooth off,<i> it will switch allegiances and pair with iPad B</i>. When iPad B shows "Apple Keyboard Connected" it can now use the Apple Keyboard.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Remember, iPad B is now the sole focus of the keyboard, and you must "break them up" before your Apple Keyboard can be shared again. Just repeat the 5 Step Pair / Unpair process again.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Happy keyboard sharing!</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
The Notes App is a wonderful tool for capturing short notes, to-dos, ideas, etc. I'm a big user of the app, especially now that I can <a href="http://www.ezipad.net/2013/04/notes-app-folders-how-to-create.html">create Notes App folders</a>, and have well over 100 notes. The idea of losing all these notes, turning on my iPad and finding they have vanished into thin air, makes me shudder.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yet I see this very problem of lost notes crop up time and time again, reported by users in various iPad forums. It can be an incredibly frustrating experience, and, unfortunately, is incredibly easy to inadvertently bring about. Fortunately, we have here a happy ending – let's solve the Case of the Disappearing Notes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The Clue: How the Notes App Syncs</b></div>
<div>
The main clue to the lost notes is not intuitive: it has to do with how iOS syncs notes. iOS always uses your email address to sync your notes. If you accidentally choose to turn off this note syncing, iOS doesn't copy the notes to your iPad, it simply removes them! Fortunately (and this is the benefit of synchronization) copies of the notes remain in your email account. If you turn notes syncing back on, the notes will all magically reappear on your iPad!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Solving the Case: Watch what happens as Notes syncing gets turned on / off</b></div>
<div>
Let's go through an example and see what happens when Notes
syncing gets turned off and on. We'll try to catch our Notes thief in the act! (Although I refer to the iPad throughout, instructions equally apply to the iPhone and iPod Touch, although screens slightly differ.)</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii6JfW0nJKhA9IOi0lU58v-Gt-wIJksBez03FzAdeRO93lg8-thd6yq8LChFoKQT4gv5OaNLOLfF9vG4jwPngIx8Y728K1duKj4_jjG8-J9VU_6cTqCHTrUpPaPYw6a23lD18x9xq5P6E/s640/blogger-image-784669243.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii6JfW0nJKhA9IOi0lU58v-Gt-wIJksBez03FzAdeRO93lg8-thd6yq8LChFoKQT4gv5OaNLOLfF9vG4jwPngIx8Y728K1duKj4_jjG8-J9VU_6cTqCHTrUpPaPYw6a23lD18x9xq5P6E/s640/blogger-image-784669243.jpg" /></a></div>
1. We'll start simply: our iPad has the vanilla Notes setup with no syncing. All notes are saved locally on the iPad. You can tell because the black title bar only a shows a count of notes. <i>The title bar does not say "Accounts", which it will if your Notes are synced.</i><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaJLW-BipKUzd_0lYnIX2_LoV9_UDRIhPQyQkMTe04Nf9IMgQ2d4xqv3GuHPlQ7xnx6lPB7U92r-5mPHw8b7N4S4RM7CQ8nuGRkaWJ4vrghDbGKiPJKjKsVrtDScXoHqYH97jzo1fXzBk/s640/blogger-image--1821209054.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaJLW-BipKUzd_0lYnIX2_LoV9_UDRIhPQyQkMTe04Nf9IMgQ2d4xqv3GuHPlQ7xnx6lPB7U92r-5mPHw8b7N4S4RM7CQ8nuGRkaWJ4vrghDbGKiPJKjKsVrtDScXoHqYH97jzo1fXzBk/s640/blogger-image--1821209054.jpg" /></a></div>
2. Now to <b>start syncing our notes</b>. Go into the <i>Settings app and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars</i>. (Screen shows how it will look on your iPhone).<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitAcheuhY3IeRfvEZ91NhU8WDAPReGVzB0SJH61RGaUweE0Dh1ByfZLnYiGfhxGwfUlX_e1CNnHdaLKB791hqE2Twmjr7zgEK-O604KfLZEoD2p-BhCD_uABHZYJPzfi_J7CYgILdecKM/s640/blogger-image-680633768.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitAcheuhY3IeRfvEZ91NhU8WDAPReGVzB0SJH61RGaUweE0Dh1ByfZLnYiGfhxGwfUlX_e1CNnHdaLKB791hqE2Twmjr7zgEK-O604KfLZEoD2p-BhCD_uABHZYJPzfi_J7CYgILdecKM/s640/blogger-image-680633768.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
3. Then tap your primary e-mail account; in this case, Gmail.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq9JeJtUsxg18fb1-BEXDFRrxm1hkpmezub5cAxF-hGZThDx8mrufGwkyFZeeKwaoR7IeehuSx5wMYDfqYxFK9-6OOjZ4Cb5NntVcAzBcNWAeLB6FGQ7O756OA2nPFp8wogu1nmCB_D4o/s640/blogger-image-27274528.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq9JeJtUsxg18fb1-BEXDFRrxm1hkpmezub5cAxF-hGZThDx8mrufGwkyFZeeKwaoR7IeehuSx5wMYDfqYxFK9-6OOjZ4Cb5NntVcAzBcNWAeLB6FGQ7O756OA2nPFp8wogu1nmCB_D4o/s400/blogger-image-27274528.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
4. This screen shows syncing options for your e-mail. Currently my notes I create in the Notes App <i>are <b>not </b>synced</i>. I want to change this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin7ujABNzGA5Jyjlk6WWwx8kCd4QaSE5BICn1XaHWT_x2rymwZQn6VSEfhWJv7xV_6f9wxxNnJ3dWD_7-5dTYeQA7HJrwXzhzQ6-B14QB5HSTT7Oc_lMubr4_KizcPT1cuu3gc-zn0Ga8/s640/blogger-image--957269844.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="373" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin7ujABNzGA5Jyjlk6WWwx8kCd4QaSE5BICn1XaHWT_x2rymwZQn6VSEfhWJv7xV_6f9wxxNnJ3dWD_7-5dTYeQA7HJrwXzhzQ6-B14QB5HSTT7Oc_lMubr4_KizcPT1cuu3gc-zn0Ga8/s400/blogger-image--957269844.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
5. I<b> flip the syncing option for Notes to ON</b>. Now, I will have the option to create Gmail-synced notes going forward. ( Notes I previously created will remain only on the local iPad and not be synchronized.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgljMKG3f-zIit4rEJUzcVhhoBDKiRafc4jbkDzii8ZcPOnmA_ENpkiB8qDxryIvI5Fk5PMFd0JjMVosDHoGQ0xXjgzOSva1ei5yCIBbrmutKaLh6tVlrXwO_20x1biL1dSKL5hxBkrGvg/s640/blogger-image-437412191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgljMKG3f-zIit4rEJUzcVhhoBDKiRafc4jbkDzii8ZcPOnmA_ENpkiB8qDxryIvI5Fk5PMFd0JjMVosDHoGQ0xXjgzOSva1ei5yCIBbrmutKaLh6tVlrXwO_20x1biL1dSKL5hxBkrGvg/s640/blogger-image-437412191.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
6. Now when I return to the Notes app, the title bar includes the "Accounts" button. <i>Notes syncing is now active</i>. We tap "Accounts".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_JvliI202VEM_J5rPKTdKkbnHGBfyCUx3Sm6UZT3j7v3F-qI6BDt7_l-1x6rkfsg3kzHJL64i7W01SZZA5dcoYBQNZwC6Zv_jba_wX7GDHicOE1GZDdj0xE2tOsU-fuZ0lBT36HpAOBU/s640/blogger-image--2104701808.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_JvliI202VEM_J5rPKTdKkbnHGBfyCUx3Sm6UZT3j7v3F-qI6BDt7_l-1x6rkfsg3kzHJL64i7W01SZZA5dcoYBQNZwC6Zv_jba_wX7GDHicOE1GZDdj0xE2tOsU-fuZ0lBT36HpAOBU/s640/blogger-image--2104701808.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
7. The Accounts tab has a few options. Basically, you can now choose to view/create Notes that are only on your iPad ("On my iPad") or Email-synced Notes (your email address the notes are synced to shows, in our case, "@gmail.com". "All Notes" let you see all notes, regardless of category. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwUvWkSCRCJL8xoaweljGvVmNtnDxmyrESSzxRgitSiY6UJFpLCuUfkW6bp2LiD17gZifYUU_Rp7iCPCWF7RdQd51KQDsC9ODylsE2p41rbKUFDdggKpMtDoxETlIh1SffFTeWD05Z8lY/s640/blogger-image--1848525145.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwUvWkSCRCJL8xoaweljGvVmNtnDxmyrESSzxRgitSiY6UJFpLCuUfkW6bp2LiD17gZifYUU_Rp7iCPCWF7RdQd51KQDsC9ODylsE2p41rbKUFDdggKpMtDoxETlIh1SffFTeWD05Z8lY/s640/blogger-image--1848525145.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
8. We tap on the Gmail account. No notes currently exist that are Gmail-synced. I'll create a short test note.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9wzqw856JpWqcVqB7IZKGfg_X4J-_w9Rt3zqJ6xwpLpauCDzFqOfIgiI5EYelg3yc__X5vf0K7y6CawOvGqpfn1t-ZI5d9JFQhP8XuVnZH8Kg1W2TZK0PbTaGO6n_0Euyta_BgZcwbGY/s640/blogger-image-1904952129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9wzqw856JpWqcVqB7IZKGfg_X4J-_w9Rt3zqJ6xwpLpauCDzFqOfIgiI5EYelg3yc__X5vf0K7y6CawOvGqpfn1t-ZI5d9JFQhP8XuVnZH8Kg1W2TZK0PbTaGO6n_0Euyta_BgZcwbGY/s640/blogger-image-1904952129.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
9. Now in our Notes list, we have our first Gmail-synced note. There is a count of 1 note in the synced account category (there are still 4 notes from before in the "On my iPad" other category).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_BT5aRrYBO-T1pZevL1XOmP7bFq8Nw0kCFiJtvQNJobI-aH8DCRPEcMROd_sryf-Kl-7OjWyQPLXcckGNGuPBp_f5vki7V51R0EaPeaLDBf4G4XnGAhx30HlZAwwqwY19M_8DXL6WeAk/s640/blogger-image-370554570.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_BT5aRrYBO-T1pZevL1XOmP7bFq8Nw0kCFiJtvQNJobI-aH8DCRPEcMROd_sryf-Kl-7OjWyQPLXcckGNGuPBp_f5vki7V51R0EaPeaLDBf4G4XnGAhx30HlZAwwqwY19M_8DXL6WeAk/s400/blogger-image-370554570.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
10. OK, the scene is set; we have a note in our synced-Gmail area. <b>Now let's turn off syncing and see what happens to the synced note</b>. I return to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Gmail e-mail account. I turn Notes syncing back to OFF.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0e5C5NEJhzRepC5Gzg75Y_lmaIlm5o7jsYyaKimEDKStJtlJHY_O_6-B2bIBrUbjWwDLtXAmtnjhL_q_DYMMMpNnP0lltQCqRGIkapmMF_obu4DN_P9M8UMRCJxaC5x67BVU5xBpAT1Q/s640/blogger-image-526434143.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0e5C5NEJhzRepC5Gzg75Y_lmaIlm5o7jsYyaKimEDKStJtlJHY_O_6-B2bIBrUbjWwDLtXAmtnjhL_q_DYMMMpNnP0lltQCqRGIkapmMF_obu4DN_P9M8UMRCJxaC5x67BVU5xBpAT1Q/s640/blogger-image-526434143.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
11. With Notes syncing now set to OFF, I returned to the Notes app. <b>My synced note has disappeared!</b> All I see are my 4 iPad notes and no "Accounts" option. This would look the same even if I had hundreds of synced notes - they would all be gone!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3yJEPNlMV0n4wjw2mil_jgyvpTD-hsb5kxfTINRztX5KHPcR5A0gcUbCtQ6W1TvSil5HJKJwkrEtiMMc6VI_htR0tg-wBdgTCINYH0Rrb3_t9rYAg5Z8Qz7EHrn35HftKnJ7ODSo10Ns/s640/blogger-image--765979705.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3yJEPNlMV0n4wjw2mil_jgyvpTD-hsb5kxfTINRztX5KHPcR5A0gcUbCtQ6W1TvSil5HJKJwkrEtiMMc6VI_htR0tg-wBdgTCINYH0Rrb3_t9rYAg5Z8Qz7EHrn35HftKnJ7ODSo10Ns/s400/blogger-image--765979705.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
12. My note may have disappeared on the iPad, but fortunately,<i> it still exists in Gmail</i>. If I log onto my Gmail account (above) on the left side you see the Notes folder, and in there is my note. This is a big advantage of syncing your notes with your e-mail account. Not only do you have a backup copy on your e-mail server, you can also get to your notes from other devices, such as a PC. (And if you change a note with your PC, the changes will synchronize on your iPad automatically.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCDTF645enfCfESy2MmrcZleH_xcLv4rz_nLUeumuBfSrsY95M5bSdxzj8wZAkG-pWkB8CNwqlXff6IT7YuEv4UOb2giizzqrxqAeEX47baWozqHz3L5mwuYsUmCwGszkrY7JF6BlwKv0/s640/blogger-image--144696094.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="373" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCDTF645enfCfESy2MmrcZleH_xcLv4rz_nLUeumuBfSrsY95M5bSdxzj8wZAkG-pWkB8CNwqlXff6IT7YuEv4UOb2giizzqrxqAeEX47baWozqHz3L5mwuYsUmCwGszkrY7JF6BlwKv0/s400/blogger-image--144696094.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
13. <b>My lost note can be recovered by turning Notes syncing ON again</b>. Shortly afterward, your e-mail-synced notes, whether one note or hundreds of notes, will re-sync and appear again on your iPad.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTGNwcnSHEFjlNUxKPXyt6M0_HMp2nQUAPgqDEu9uerM2G2QTkBObcUGf68TAWiK2-1a2_7CKiXI9pWXOQ5M7v41sylPAn59_OGkcKqX2G6EGzghQV582u4A3T02gu0asjefZPZqxiEpE/s640/blogger-image--1240284384.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTGNwcnSHEFjlNUxKPXyt6M0_HMp2nQUAPgqDEu9uerM2G2QTkBObcUGf68TAWiK2-1a2_7CKiXI9pWXOQ5M7v41sylPAn59_OGkcKqX2G6EGzghQV582u4A3T02gu0asjefZPZqxiEpE/s640/blogger-image--1240284384.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
14. <b>Notes are syncing again, and my "deleted", vanished note has returned.</b> The Case of the Disappearing Notes has been solved!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj18vpNfeRhdxKzc86Z6YJLp3aQXkZtMPdwaRW6Hzl013f90OUGxfFR6PwOPBasr6ZFBS9DvAfD_ChlrEQ4zAJsFL6_VKIKccr8eMDJMnLnfWaWWlWMpV4JTXZqI2bLXsJxEvJ3r6KzOjM/s1600/apple_keyboard.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj18vpNfeRhdxKzc86Z6YJLp3aQXkZtMPdwaRW6Hzl013f90OUGxfFR6PwOPBasr6ZFBS9DvAfD_ChlrEQ4zAJsFL6_VKIKccr8eMDJMnLnfWaWWlWMpV4JTXZqI2bLXsJxEvJ3r6KzOjM/s400/apple_keyboard.png" width="400" /></a></div>
If you are the proud owner of a new Bluetooth Wireless Apple Keyboard for your iPad, and, like me, have not used Apple devices prior to your iPad - you may be in for a bit of keyboard shock. All the old PC shortcut key standbys - Ctrl+C for Copy; Ctrl+V for Paste: Ctrl+A for Select All - none of these work on the Apple Keyboard!</div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
Fear not, the equivalent shortcut keys are there on your shiny, new wireless Apple Keyboard, but just in a slightly different manner.</div>
<div>
<br />
By substituting the Command key on the Apple Keyboard for the Ctrl key you can replicate most of the primary PC keyboard shortcuts.</div>
<div>
<br />
Here are keyboard shortcuts for use with your iPad, as reported by Apple Support Discussions user Benjamin Lewis in <a href="https://discussions.apple.com/message/18612593#18612593" target="_blank">this post</a>:</div>

Keep this little keyboard quick reference handy and you'll soon be as comfortable on the Apple Keyboard with your iPad as you are with your PC laptop keyboard. (Note: the Bluetooth Wireless Apple Keyboard works fine with all iOS devices, i.e. the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.)<br />

If you've taken the leap into the iPad's next frontier - using the iPad for <i>work </i>- the Bluetooth Wireless Apple Keyboard can be an essential add-on. I'm typing this on the Apple Keyboard now and it definitely works with the iPad (and all iOS devices).<br />
<br />
But the setup instructions that come with the Apple Keyboard neglect to mention the iPad, only provideing a Mac pairing how-to. So, correcting Apple's omission, <b>here's the step-by-step how-to for setting up / pairing the wireless Bluetooth Apple Keyboard with your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.</b><br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxD4FnZizKEcRFB0O0Yv5ku3TzMd0-lNEsJ8kcXq-0iJr__igrTPPW04d03ZExYMvXEzxuIbyaGk1H1AW__LLu7gIOzly1HbYH2e_D5S2ivkXTaHQSoKZInqlrBMDAsYH8hXxZBjBXhMk/s640/blogger-image--171841444.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="60" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxD4FnZizKEcRFB0O0Yv5ku3TzMd0-lNEsJ8kcXq-0iJr__igrTPPW04d03ZExYMvXEzxuIbyaGk1H1AW__LLu7gIOzly1HbYH2e_D5S2ivkXTaHQSoKZInqlrBMDAsYH8hXxZBjBXhMk/s400/blogger-image--171841444.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First, go into the Settings App and Bluetooth. <b>Turn Bluetooth "ON" if is not on already.</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggJbmYkO3MgkJH6ggX7KmuQWHpSeQHS2kxj89ULMIkugUTynTUz3lxCvv-Xzn952z7cUH1KyHqFlPS-L3V_RmaoQ70qj1hyAL0qMwn3wys9H0xeyTVIZhlJ_RKRwDLPQ-2Mk4FnJSDm0s/s640/blogger-image-976305544.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggJbmYkO3MgkJH6ggX7KmuQWHpSeQHS2kxj89ULMIkugUTynTUz3lxCvv-Xzn952z7cUH1KyHqFlPS-L3V_RmaoQ70qj1hyAL0qMwn3wys9H0xeyTVIZhlJ_RKRwDLPQ-2Mk4FnJSDm0s/s320/blogger-image-976305544.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
Once Bluetooth is on, <b>press on the Apple Keyboard power button</b> (the silver button on the top right side of the keyboard). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A small, green indicator light will turn on solid, and then blink in patterns of two. <i>This is the keyboard "pairing" with your iPad</i> via Bluetooth connectivity.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Under Bluetooth in Settings, you'll see the Apple Keyboard now listed, and it will say "Not Connected". <b>Tap the "Apple Wireless Keyboard" item to connect it.</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div>
You'll be prompted with a <i>4 digit code to enter on the Apple Keyboard</i>. Enter that code as directed.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>After a brief pause, you should see the Apple Keyboard is "Connected". </b> </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can now use your keyboard anywhere on your iPad where typing is required. Note: <b>after pairing your Apple Keyboard, your iPad will automatically default to the keyboard for any input</b>. You may be surprised when the onscreen keyboard fails to popup like normal!<br />
<br />
If you want to switch to the iPad onscreen keyboard <i>tap the Apple Keyboard "Eject" key to toggle back and forth</i> between the Apple Keyboard and the iPad keyboard. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To go back to only using the iPad keyboard, turn Bluetooth "off" or power off the Apple Keyboard by holding the power button untill the green indicator button turns on and then disappears. To reconnect, turn Bluetooth on, power on the Apple Keyboard, and your iOS device will automatically detect it.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">A great thing about the iPad and iPhone is how easy they are to use - so easy, even a child could do it! <span style="font-family: inherit;">3. Once in Restrictions, you can alter a number of permissions on your various apps. Turn off those you don't want to allow. You can change settings back when you need to purchase things yourself.</span></div>
<ul>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Itunes = OFF. Turns off purchases through the Itunes store of music, movies and videos.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Installing Apps = OFF. Turns off purchases through the App Store. The App Store icon actually disappears from your iPad, iPhone with this setting set to OFF. Turning it ON restores the icon.</div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
In-App Purchases = OFF. Very important! This is how children buy additional things while in a game. </div>
</li>
<li><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Require Password = Immediately. If you only make one change do this one. The default is 15 minutes, so after making an app store purchase where you have put in your password, for the next 15 minutes additional purchases can be made without reentering the password. Typically, you buy a game for a visiting child and give it to them to play. If the game allows in-app purchases, how many times can a child click the cute "Buy" button in 15 minutes? This setting always requires passwords before any purchases are made, no 15 minute allowance.</div>
